LOS ANGELES - Jonathan Alleman had a match-best 15 kills and Jaime Mayol added 14 kills to lead the No. 3-ranked BYU men's volleyball team to a 30-16, 30-28, 30-22 win over unranked USC in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Saturday (March 1) in USC's Lyon Center.
The Cougars, who also swept USC on Friday (Feb. 28), are now 11-3 overall (that's also their MPSF record). The Trojans, who lost their eighth consecutive match, are 3-14 overall and 1-11 in the MPSF.
Alleman, who hit .684, was among 4 BYU players over .400. He also recorded 5 digs. Mayol, who had a match-high 4 blocks, hit .455 for the Cougars, who hit .430 as a team to USC's .157. Mayol added a match-high 4 blocks and teammate Rafael Paal had a match-best 11 digs.
Ian Gallagher topped USC with 14 kills (hitting .407) and had 5 digs, while Blake Tippett added 9 kills and 6 digs..
BYU outblocked Troy, 8.0 to 2.5.
The Cougars ran away early with the first game by running off 7 straight points to go up 17-11 (they hit .520 in the game and had 5 blocks). BYU closed out the tightly-contested second game with an Alleman kill and then a Trojan hitting error. And the Cougars never trailed in the third game, as they hit .457.
USC next hosts No. 4-ranked Lewis on Monday (March 3) in a non-conference match at 7 p.m. in the North Gym.
