LOS ANGELES - Jaime Mayol had 13 kills and 5 blocks to help the No. 3-ranked BYU men's volleyball team to a 33-31, 30-27, 30-24 win over unranked USC in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Friday (Feb. 28) in USC's Lyon Center.
The Cougars improved to 10-3 overall (their MPSF record is the same), while USC lost its seventh match in a row to drop to 3-13 overall and 1-10 in the MPSF.
Mayol, who also had 4 digs, hit .706 in the match. Teammate Rafael Paal had a match-high 14 kills (hitting .370) with 5 digs, while Jonathan Alleman added 12 kills (hitting .389) with 3 blocks.
For USC, Ian Gallagher had a team-best 10 kills with 2 aces, while Blake Tippett added 8 kills.
BYU hit a blazing .472 to USC's .215 and outblocked Troy, 10.0 to 3.0.
USC was serving with a 29-28 lead in the first game, but couldn't close out the Cougars. In the second game, BYU overcame a 13-11 deficit by scoring 6 straight points to forge a lead it never relinquished (the Cougars hit .633 in that game). In the final game, BYU tallied 5 consecutive points to open up a 9-5 edge; USC then pulled within 18-17 before the Cougars scored the next 3 points to regain control.
The teams play again on Saturday (March 1) in another MPSF match at 7 p.m. in the Lyon Center.
