LOS ANGELES - Joe Nargi had 20 kills and Nils Nielsen added 17 kills to help the No. 5-ranked Cal State Northridge men's volleyball team survive unranked USC's upset bid, 18-30, 30-23, 19-30, 30-23, 21-19, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Wednesday (Jan. 22) in the USC North Gym.
The Matadors improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the MPSF, while USC fell to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the MPSF.
In the decisive fifth game, USC came back from an 8-4 deficit to tie it at 10-10. The game then see-sawed, with CSUN having match point 5 times and USC once, before a Trojan hitting error and then a USC ball handling error ended the match.
Mark Dusharme led USC with a career-best 22 kills while hitting .447. Teammate Josh Day added 13 kills (hitting .360), Jeff Bailey had a career-high 11 kills and Derek Otte had a career-best 10 kills. Day had 5 blocks, while Dusharme and Bailey each had 4. Joao Grangeiro had a match-high 16 digs.
Cary Hansen came off the CSUN bench to get 11 kills and Stan Douglas added 10, while Ty Tramblie had 5 blocks and Doug English had 15 digs.
The Trojans outhit CSUN, .346 to .285. Both teams posted 9.0 blocks and served 7 aces.
USC next hosts No. 12 UC Santa Barbara on Saturday (Jan. 25) in the Lyon Center in a 7 p.m. MPSF contest.
