THIS SEASON: Michael Gausman, a 2003 junior, returns as one of Troy’s top butterfly and medley swimmers.

2002: After a year away from the team, Gausman returned to become a key contributor for the Trojans as a 2002 sophomore … Injured after qualifying for three events at the NCAAs, he still raced, though was inhibted by his injuries. He was 28th in the 200y fly (1:47.60), 36th in the 100y fly (48.59) and 38th in the 200y IM (1:50.07). He also swam the fly portion of the 200y medley relay unit that was 16th … At the 2002 Pac-10s, he was USC’s top finisher in the 200y fly (fifth, 1:45.42) and the 200y IM (eighth, 1:49.33). He was also ninth in the 400y IM (3:51.46) … His prelim time in the 200y IM at Pac-10s (1:48.91) was second best on the team … Despite breaking his leg during the summer, he still swam at the 2002 U.S. Summer Nationals. He was 10th in the 200m fly (2:01.23) and also swam the 100m fly.

2001: Gausman did not compete in 2001.

2000: As a freshman in 2000, Gausman competed in three events at the NCAA Championships. He was 22nd in the 200m fly (1:59.33, sc), 31st in the 400m IM (4:26.72, sc) and 40th in the 200m IM (2:02.98, sc) … At the 2000 Pac-10 Championships, he reached the finals of the 200y fly, taking fifth (1:46.08). He was also ninth in the 400y IM (3:52.11) and 12th in the 200y IM (1:49.74). His time in the 200y fly was the second-best on the team.

HIGH SCHOOL: Gausman prepped at Clayton Valley High in Clayton, Calif., where he was a prep All-American, a four-time CIF North Coast Section champion and a team MVP ... He also has a good background on the national scene ... He was fourth at the 1998 U.S. Spring Nationals in the 200m fly with an Olympic Trials cut of 2:01.18 ... He competed at the World Cup in China and with the U.S. National Junior team in Spain.
